STUDIES ON EASTERN EQUINE ENCEPHALOMYELITIS III. INTRAOCULAR INflECTION WITH FIXED VIRUS IN THE GUINEA PIG

چکیده

In the preceding paper (1) it was shown that a recently isolated strain of equine encephalomyelitis virus, when injected into the eye, sometimes spread along the optic pathways. This type of spread was, however, inconstant. But with a fixed strain of virus (2, 3) an entirely constant behavior was observed which was capable of systematic study. For the study of virus activity within the central nervous system, inoculation into the eyeball presents certain great advantages due to the anatomical peculiarities of this organ, which make it the most readily accessible portion of the central nervous system.

The Histology of Equine Encephalomyelitis

The virus of equine encephalomyelitis (eastern strain) evokes in the horse, calf, sheep and dog an unusually intense encephalomyelitis characterized by acute primary degeneration of nerve cells, the appearance in neurons of the brain stem and elsewhere of nuclear inclusions resembling those in Borna disease and poliomyelitis, polymorphonuclear infiltration in the nervous tissues with early micr...

The Complement Fixation Test in the Diagnosis of Virus Infections of the Central Nervous System

A specific complement fixation test can be obtained in various central nervous system virus infections by using as antigens emulsions of infected brain tissue, freezing and thawing the brain emulsion, and then centrifuging it in an angle head centrifuge at 3500 R.P.M. for 1 hour. The method has proved reliable in the case of rabies, St. Louis encephalitis, Japanese B encephalitis, lymphocytic c...

Radioimmunoassay for quantitation of antibodies to alphaviruses with staphylococcal protein A.

A radioimmunoassay (RIA) procedure is described for measuring antibodies to alphaviruses in human and other mammalian sera. The test employed protein Abearing Staphylococcus aureus as a solid-phase immunoadsorbent for (3)H-labeled viruses complexed with immunoglobulin G. Using antibodies produced in humans and guinea pigs, the RIA procedure clearly differentiated among antibodies to Venezuelan,...

Studies on Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis I . Histopathology of the Nervous System

The pathology of the nervous system in equine encephalomyelitis has been described for both the Western (1) and the Eastern (2) forms of the disease. Much attention has been paid to the intranuclear inclusion bodies, found in glial and mesodermal cells as well as in neurones. The intense inflammation, together with the necrosis of nerve cells, has been reported. I t is the purpose of this paper...

Active Immunication of Guinea Pigs with the Virus of Equine Encephalomyelitis

Active Eastern or Western equine encephalomyelitis virus in three forms,-chemically untreated but simply passaged through series of mice; adsorbed on alumina Gel C, and precipitated by tannin,-yielded practically the same results when employed for the immunization of guinea pigs. The virus is not inactivated by the process of adsorption or precipitation : guinea pigs and mice inoculated in the ...
